iPhone Wi-Fi: Turn it on and off automatically

21 April 2026

Disable Wi-Fi when leaving home can have several benefits: enhanced security, battery savings, or simply a good digital habit. The problem? We often forget to do it manually.

Good news: the iPhone allows you to automate this action, and even re-enable Wi-Fi automatically as soon as you return home. Here’s how to do it easily, using Apple’s Shortcuts app.

Why automate Wi-Fi on iPhone?

  • Avoid unnecessary or unsecured Wi-Fi connections

  • Preserve battery life

  • No longer have to think about it daily

  • Improve user comfort

Step 1: Install the Shortcuts app

If you haven’t already, download the Shortcuts app on your iPhone.
It allows you to create automatic actions based on specific events, such as a location or time.

Step 2: Create a departure automation

  1. Open Shortcuts and go to the Automation tab

  2. Tap +, then choose Leave

  3. Select your home as the location (allow location access if prompted)

  4. Choose Anytime and Run Immediately

Step 3: Turn off Wi-Fi automatically

  1. Tap Create a Shortcut

  2. Search for the Set Wi-Fi action

  3. Select Turn Off

  4. Save the automation

Result : Wi-Fi turns off automatically as soon as you leave your home.

Step 4: Turn Wi-Fi back on when you return

For optimal operation, create a second automation:

  • This time choose Arrive
  • Select the same location (your home)
  • Set the action Set Wi-FiTurn On

Final result

Thanks to these two automations:

  • Wi-Fi turns off automatically when you leave
  • It turns back on automatically as soon as you return home

No need to think about it anymore—your iPhone handles it for you.
