6 Tips to Use Your Smartphone Abroad

12 August 2025

When travelling for business, your smartphone becomes much more than just a communication tool – it’s your mobile assistant. To avoid unpleasant surprises such as roaming charges or connection issues, DEEP shares practical tips to help you stay connected with peace of mind.

1. Check Your Mobile Plan Before You Leave

Being prepared helps you avoid unexpected charges. Before leaving Luxembourg, check the terms and conditions of your mobile plan abroad, especially if you're travelling outside the European Union. This will help you avoid roaming charges, which can quickly add up.

Roaming allows you to use your mobile plan on a foreign network without changing your SIM card or number. Thanks to agreements between providers, your phone will automatically connect to a local network upon arrival.

2. Activate an International Option If Needed

🌍  In Europe

Good news: if you're travelling within the EU or to French overseas territories, you can use your Luxembourgish mobile plan just like at home. Since 2017, roaming charges have been abolished in these areas. However, make sure you stay within the fair use limits!

🌎 Outside Europe

If your trip takes you outside Europe, consider activating a temporary international plan. This will give you an allowance of data and minutes suitable for your destination.

3. Keep Your Data Usage Under Control

Here are a few simple habits to avoid exceeding your data limit:

  • 📊 Track your usage through your provider’s mobile app
  • 📵 Turn off mobile data abroad if you don’t have the right plan
  • 📥 Avoid downloading large files (videos, documents) without Wi-Fi
  • 📶 Identify free Wi-Fi hotspots in advance (hotels, cafés, airports)
  • 🗺️ Use Google Maps offline for navigation

🔔 If you exceed your allowance, you can:

  • Connect to a secure Wi-Fi network
  • Purchase an additional data package
  • Or use a local SIM card

4. Secure Your Connections with a VPN

While travelling, you'll often be connected to public Wi-Fi networks. To protect your professional data, install a VPN (Virtual Private Network). It encrypts your connections and prevents unauthorised access to your sensitive information.

5. Don’t Forget About Charging

🔌 Check the plug types used in your destination country and take a universal adapter
🔋 Bring a portable charger so you can recharge your phone at any time, even without a power outlet

6. Prepare Useful Numbers

Before leaving, make a note of your provider's international customer service number.

To contact DEEP from abroad, dial +352 2424 4000.

🔐 Also activate the "Find My Device" feature or install a tracking app in case your phone gets lost.

In Summary

Before going on a business (or even personal) trip, remember to:

  • Check your mobile plan and any international options
  • Monitor your data usage
  • Secure your connections
  • Prepare for charging your device
  • And keep useful contact numbers within easy reach
